The Duskbloods The Virtue System Explained

Five Virtue sources plus Sigils — every way to earn enough to survive the Culling.

Virtue System Guide

Virtue is the universal score in The Duskbloods. Every Dusk Battle revolves around earning enough Virtue during each phase to avoid culling, then winning the Moon Blood Bestowal in Phase IV to convert a strong performance into a match victory. FromSoftware’s preview hands-on sessions in Tokyo during August 2026 surfaced the complete list of Virtue types: Repulsion Virtue, Commendation Virtue, Flame Virtue, Pledge Virtue, and Sword Virtue, plus optional Sigil Virtue for players using the per-match objective system. Understanding each source separates leaders from culled players.

This guide breaks down every Virtue type, where it appears, when to chase it, and how it interacts with the culling threshold during Phases II and III. Pair it with Dusk Battle Phases for the match timeline and PvPvE rules for the broader scoring context.

How Virtue scoring works

Virtue is relative. Scores are not displayed in the UI during play in the build press tested, and rankings can shift as other players accumulate or lose Virtue from the same sources. What matters is whether you finish each phase ranked above the cull threshold—bottom three after Phase II, bottom two after Phase III. You can fall behind from being first to a Flame Virtue corpse and seeing no one else climb high enough to threaten you, or you can climb by killing a Trespasser boss while rivals brawl at the Ritual Site.

The implication is that every Virtue source has both a value and an opportunity cost. Killing a common enemy gives you small but safe Commendation Virtue. Chasing a Sigil can pay out massively if you complete it—but dying mid-Sigil can erase everything you earned, which is why aggressive play is not always optimal.

Repulsion Virtue

Repulsion Virtue is earned by defeating Trespassers—boss-tier AI enemies marked on the map. Trespassers vary in difficulty; weaker ones fall in a few coordinated hits, while the toughest Trespassers can absorb significant punishment and reward proportionally more Repulsion Virtue.

Repulsion Virtue has two strategic strengths:

  • It is secure if you have allies nearby, because Trespassers are designed to encourage co-op. Two to four Bloodsworn splitting a Trespasser each take a share, with the player contributing the most getting the largest cut. AI Trespassers do not steal from other AI Trespassers, so there is no flank risk.
  • It is time-efficient if your team is mobile. A Trespasser can be worth more Virtue than an entire duel chain at a Ritual Site, but only if you reach it before the timer advances.

The risk is exposure. Trespasser kills usually happen in fixed map regions, so rivals hunting Sigils or rotating to a Ritual Site can interrupt and steal the bounty. The safest plan is to bring a Destined Companion, an Alliance partner, or a co-op friend.

Commendation Virtue

Commendation Virtue is the catch-all award at the end of each phase. There are two commendations:

  • Bloodfang Virtue: awarded to the player with the most PvE enemy kills during the phase.
  • Collector Virtue: awarded to the player who collected the most dropped items during the phase.

Commendations are highly competitive. If you are a PvE grinder, Bloodfang is your path. If you are a rotation specialist, Collector is your path. Both depend on relative ranking rather than absolute value—if a rival kills more enemies than you, you get nothing even if you killed dozens.

Best practice is to commit to one path per phase. Splitting your attention between Bloodfang and Collector usually yields neither. Use the Gameplay hub for broader role-planning before queueing.

Flame Virtue

Flame Virtue is the first-come, first-served score tied to purple enthroned corpses hidden across the map. Phase regions where Flame Virtue spawns are randomized each phase, but corpse locations within that region tend to repeat.

Flame Virtue is the most contested single-source Virtue because:

  • The value is immediate and visible to other players who see you race toward a corpse.
  • The corpse is one-time—you cannot second-claim if someone else gets there first.
  • A successful Flame grab often guarantees a top-five finish for the phase, which is the safest culling protection.

The skill here is route knowledge. Press playtesters consistently flagged that map literacy beats raw mechanics for Flame Virtue. Read Maps and especially the Lowarno City guide to plan efficient corpse runs.

Pledge Virtue

Pledge Virtue is earned by capturing and defending Pledge points inside Ritual Sites. A Ritual Site opens during the back half of Phases II and III. Four or five Pledges appear inside the marked zone; standing on a Pledge and holding the action button for about ten seconds captures it.

Pledge Virtue is unique because:

  • It is the primary source for players who prefer non-PvP strategies.
  • It is contestable: another player can interrupt and steal your capture.
  • Capturing and holding consumes time and exposes you to ganks.

Successful Pledge play requires either a powerful Bloodsworn like Zork who can hold a capture point through pressure, or an Alliance/Destined Companion setup where a partner covers you while you capture. Solo players who want to ride Pledge Virtue should rotate between Pledges rather than committing to one.

Sword Virtue

Sword Virtue is earned by killing other players inside Ritual Sites. This is the highest-percentage PvP Virtue because the matched environment, per-phase bonus items (Goldstones and Redstones), and rival proximity make kills reliable.

Sword Virtue is the fastest path to the top of the leaderboard once Phase II opens. It also makes you the most visible target. Read the Tier List archetypes guide for how Bloodsworn identification changes Sword Virtue efficiency.

In Phase IV, the Moon Blood Bestowal, Sword Virtue is the only Virtue type that matters. Phase IV does not feature Pledges or Trespassers; whoever scores the last kill wins.

Sigil Virtue

Sigils are per-match objectives unique to each Bloodsworn. Activating a Sigil before queuing yields bonus Virtue on completion. The Closed Network Test build surfaced four Sigils:

  • Sigil of a Sworn Enemy (Albert): hunt and kill a marked rival. The other Sigils reference this style.
  • Sigil of an Old Friend: seek out a designated ally and propose an Alliance to receive joint benefits.
  • Sigil of the Eye of Moralis: track and defeat a player branded as a Heretic. The Heretic can also defeat their hunter, rewarding them too.
  • Sigil of Love: propose marriage to a designated rival. Acceptance creates Lovers with shared bonuses; rejection forfeits the Sigil Virtue.

Director Hidetaka Miyazaki said during the Tokyo interview that Sigils remain a wild card in his design. They can dramatically alter the typical cadence of a match, especially the Sigil of Love, which redirects a PvP duel into a cooperative interaction.

Goldstones and Redstones

Two on-the-ground items spawn around Ritual Sites:

  • Goldstones: boost Pledge Virtue gained from captures.
  • Redstones: boost Sword Virtue gained from player kills.

These items are short-lived and shared; whoever picks one up keeps its bonus until respawn. Tracking the spawns around your preferred Ritual Site is one of the higher-skill rotations for a serious PvP player.

What is not a Virtue source

A few things players sometimes treat as Virtue are not:

  • Map exploration does not grant Virtue on its own. Walking into a new region yields nothing.
  • Summoning Kin does not give direct Virtue. Kin help you fight enemies and rivals, which indirectly raises Commendation or Sword Virtue.
  • Alliances generate shared rewards rather than unique Virtue, but they reduce the chance of culling while bonded.

Knowing what is not a source is as important as knowing what is. Players who chase the wrong objectives waste Phase I and start Phase II already behind.

Frequently asked questions

Are Virtue totals shown during the match?

Not in the Network Test build. Rankings are visible through kill activity, capture status, and rival behaviour. The retail 2026 version may show explicit rankings—it is one of the most-requested UI features from the press preview.

What happens if I run out of healing flasks?

Players start with two healing flasks. Special items found in chests can raise the limit. Without items, you have two chances per skirmish to recover. This is one of the strongest reasons to rotate to chests in Phase I.

Do Trespassers respawn during a phase?

Yes, but the rotation is not fully predictable. Hunting Trespassers requires scouting multiple regions and being ready to respond to events that lure AI mobs to your area.

How does ranking work in Duos Mode?

Duos Mode is a separate form of Dusk Battle where four teams of two share a pool of Virtue and weapon enhancements. The Phase IV finale pits the two best teams against each other in a 2v2 with a shared pool of two lives. Read How to play PvPvE for the mode-level breakdown.
